General and Privacy Concerns

Does meeting with or receiving support from The SAFE Office cost money?

No. All services provided by the SAFE Office are at no cost for all current Rice undergraduate and graduate students. There are no fees, billing, or health insurance claims.

What if the incident happened off-campus, over break, or before I came to Rice?

We support Rice students regardless of when or where an incident occurred. Whether something happened off-campus, during a university break, online, or years before you enrolled at Rice, our Resource Navigators are here to support you.

Will my parents, magisters, or professors find out if I talk to SAFE?

No. Your engagement with the SAFE Office is private. We do not notify your parents, college magisters, advisors, or professors that you have contacted us. If you need academic supportive measures (like an assignment extension), we coordinate them discreetly without sharing personal details about your situation with your instructors.

Is the SAFE Office confidential?

SAFE Resource Navigators are Responsible Employees, which means that, like most staff and faculty on campus, we are required to notify the Title IX Office when we learn about situations involving interpersonal violence, sexual violence, or stalking. However, we take your privacy very seriously. Notifying Title IX does not automatically launch a formal investigation, notify your parents, or force you to take any action you are not comfortable with. We share only the minimum necessary information, and we prioritize keeping details as private as possible while helping you navigate your options at your own pace.

Does the SAFE Office handle university investigations or take disciplinary action?

No. The SAFE Office is a support and prevention office. We do not conduct investigations or impose disciplinary sanctions on students. Our role is to provide support and resource navigation. Whether you are seeking help after experiencing harm or navigating a report made against you, our office focuses entirely on supporting your wellbeing, helping you understand your options, and arranging supportive measures.

Appointments and Walk-ins

Do I need to make an appointment, or can I just walk in?

Both! You are welcome to walk into our office during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM). If you prefer a dedicated time or want to ensure a specific Navigator is available, you can email us at safesupport@rice.edu to schedule ahead.

Can I bring a friend, RA, or support person with me to my appointment?

Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to bring a friend, roommate, RA, advocate, or family member to sit with you during your appointment for emotional support or wait for you in our lobby.

Where is the SAFE Office located?

We are located inside the Morton L. Rich Student Health Center and across the hall from Student Health Services.
